Hashes

MD5
SHA-1
SHA-256
SHA-384
SHA-512

These are the hashes of empty text. MD5 and SHA-1 are fine for checksums but shouldn't be used to protect passwords.

What is the Hash Generator?

A hash is a short fingerprint of some text: the same input always gives the same hash, and any change gives a completely different one. Generate MD5, SHA-1 and the SHA-2 family at once.

How it works

How to use the Hash Generator

3 simple steps. No experience needed.

What can you use it for?

  • Check that two pieces of text are identical.
  • Create a checksum for a value in a script or config.
  • Compare a hash from documentation with your own.

Which algorithm to use

SHA-256 is the everyday choice for checksums, signatures and data integrity. SHA-384 and SHA-512 give longer outputs. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes but still common for quick checksums and legacy systems.

Checking a download

Many downloads publish a SHA-256 checksum. If the hash of the text you have matches the published one exactly, the content is identical — one changed character gives a completely different hash.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a hash be decrypted?

No — hashing is one-way. Sites that “decrypt” MD5 just look it up in lists of common inputs.

Should I use MD5 for passwords?

No. Use a dedicated password-hashing method such as bcrypt or Argon2 on your server.

Why is the hash of the same text different on another site?

Usually hidden differences: a trailing space, a line break at the end, or different letter case. Hashes change completely with any difference.
